The Essence of Islamic Civilization (Occasional Papers Series 21)

This book outlines the essence of Islamic civilization, rooted in the concept of tawhid as its primary and most fundamental principle. Al-Faruqi asserts that tawhid, or the oneness of God, is not only the core of Islamic teachings but also the source of identity, structure, and dynamics of all aspects of Islamic civilization. In this book, tawhid is explained multidimensionally, encompassing both the methodological dimension—namely the principles of unity, rationality, and tolerance—and the substantive dimension—including metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, axiology, and social order. Al-Faruqi argues that tawhid distinguishes Islam from other civilizations because it affirms the ontological separation between God and creation, and encourages the formation of a just, civilized, and rational society. With a philosophical and theological approach, this book not only offers a critique of Western civilization but also emphasizes Islam's superiority in creating an integral, holistic, and balanced order of life between this world and the hereafter.
