The Encyclopedia of Women’s Health

The underlying assumption of this book is that every woman wants to take responsibility for her own health. The only way she can act intelligently and safely in her own best interest is to understand the workings of her body and to know what kinds of care and treatment are available. Medicine is not yet a “hard” science; indeed, it may never be one, and certainly not for many years to come. An enormous number of things about our bodies still are not known or are at best imperfectly understood. Therefore it is especially important to know the various options and to choose among them with the fullest possible information. There is more than one way to deal with breast cancer, more than one way to treat a vaginal infection, more than one way to practice birth control.
