The Religion of Java

This classic work by anthropologist Clifford Geertz presents an in-depth study of the diversity of religious systems in Javanese society. Based on fieldwork conducted in the Kediri area of East Java, Geertz demonstrates that religion in Java is not a single entity, but is divided into three major sects: abangan, santri, and priyayi.
Geertz describes how these three religious orientations coexist, sometimes complementing each other and sometimes causing social tension. He also highlights the function of rituals such as slametan (slametan), the role of figures such as kyai (Islamic religious leaders), and the socio-political dynamics that influence religious practice.
Through a detailed ethnographic approach, this book reveals the complexity of Javanese religious identity and offers an analytical framework that remains a key reference in the study of Indonesian anthropology, religion, and culture.
