Classical Utilitarianism From Hume to Mill
This book examines the development of classical utilitarianism in the tradition of Western moral philosophy from the 18th to the 19th centuries. The author traces the concept of utility as a basis for moral judgment, evolving from the thought of David Hume to a more systematic form in the work of John Stuart Mill. Through historical and philosophical analysis, Rosen shows how ideas about utility, happiness, and the relationship between pleasure and pain became the basis for determining what actions are considered morally right. The book also examines the relationship between utilitarianism and concepts of justice, freedom, and social order in political and moral theory of the period. Furthermore, this work places utilitarianism within the context of earlier philosophical traditions, particularly the influence of Epicurean thought, which emphasized the role of pleasure and pain in human life. Using a critical approach, Rosen demonstrates that classical utilitarianism is not simply a simple moral theory about the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people, but rather a complex framework that shaped the development of modern moral philosophy.
