<note>This book examines the role of wayang mythology in shaping the tolerance values of Javanese society. Anderson explains that tolerance is not an innate trait of Javanese society, but rather the result of cultural traditions passed down through wayang as a means of moral, aesthetic, and philosophical education. Through wayang characters such as Judistira, Arjuna, Bima, Kresna, Karna, and Semar, Javanese culture teaches an appreciation for the diversity of characters, social roles, and moral values. Tolerance is also supported by the Javanese cosmological view that emphasizes balance and harmony. However, modernization and social change have shifted the function of wayang from a medium of cultural education to entertainment. This book concludes that Javanese tolerance is the result of historical and cultural processes shaped by wayang traditions and traditional social structures, and provides important insights into the relationship between mythology, culture, and social character formation.</note>
